4 BIG WALKS – Wilpena Pound, Uluru base, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon Rim
Itinerary
Day 1 - Alice Springs to Kings Canyon
Travel through the ranges and across the sandy rivers of Central Australia to Kings Canyon. The first big hike is the 3 hour Rim Walk where you'll weave amongst the sandstone domes of the Lost City, relax in the cool surrounds of the Garden of Eden pool and take in the defying views along the walls of the Canyon. Camp in bushland surrounds. All camp sites on the tour have adequate toilet and shower facilities. Choice of tents and swags tonight.(LD)
Days 2 and 3 - Uluru and Kata Tjuta
Time is on our side. Two nights makes a big difference: second chances for sunsets and sunrises. As well as plenty of time for Uluru walks and the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, there is time to do the Valley of the Winds walk (we guide) at Kata Tjuta. Free time can be used for local indigenous tours, air flights, a swim in the pool or other refreshments. Camp with facilities in full view of Uluru.(BLD)
Day 4 – The Breakaways to Uluru
Just beyond the Dog Fence, the mining moonscape takes over. Roam the colourful Breakaways (site of Mad Max III) before arrival in Coober Pedy. Underground bunkhouse accommodation is our 'digs' for tonight and we're going out for dinner. (BLD)
Day 5 - Coober Pedy to William Creek
We'll show you about Coober Pedy - underground house, mine tour, opal cutting, an underground church - and give you time to explore and 'noodle' (fossick) for opals. Desert landscapes include red dunes, salt pans and gibber plains on the afternoon drive to William Creek. Lake Cadibarrawirracanna can be a refreshing short detour. We camp in swags (or tents) within stumbling distance of William Creek Pub.(BLD)
Day 6 - Oodnadatta Track to Flinders Ranges
The Oodnadatta Track retraces the dusty trail of camel caravans and original Ghan railway to the fascinating thermal mound springs, Lake Eyre and Marree's abandoned railway station (and rusty locos) and the Arabunna Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Next stage offers the Aboriginal ochre pits, a visit to eccentric Talc Alf (he's usually in), views of Leigh Creek coalmines and Copley Bakery. Break into the Flinders Ranges through Parachilna Gorge to Angorichina where we stay in bunkhouse style accommodation.(BLD)
Day 7 - Flinders Ranges
Dirt roads take us through the heart of the Ranges to the historic copper mine village of Blinman and onto Wilpena Pound, the famous natural amphitheatre. There's time to tackle the spectacular walks and challenging climbs. Mt Ohlssen Bagge is about 3 hours return. Views are breathtaking. Camp amidst pine forest at the base of the mountains. The lodge at Wilpena Pound has a pool and bar that we're welcome to use! (BLD)
Day 8 - Wilpena Pound to Adelaide
Enjoy more expansive mountain views as we pass the Elder Range, calling by the outpost town of Hawker, then one time Transcontinental Railway junction of Quorn, the popular destination of Melrose at Mount Remarkable, a string of little country towns and the vineyards of the Clare Valley. Arrive Adelaide early evening.(BL)
